After what has seemed like an eternally long wait since Adam’s Glam Nation/FYE era ended, we have finally arrived at May 2012 – the month that Adam’s new album “Trespassing” will be released! The album will drop in the U.S. & Canada on May 15th. Lucky fans in New Zealand & Japan will get the album a few days earlier on May 11th, Australia & Germany a few days later on May 18th, while some other European countries (U.K., Ireland, France) will have to wait until July. In addition to the album release, we can look forward to three concerts with Adam headlining this month, the KRZ Summer Bash in Wilkes-Barre PA on May 25th, at Six Flags New England on May 26th, and the Freshtival in National Harbor MD on May 27th. We will also see Adam perform on American Idol May 17th, will have the official push of “Never Close Our Eyes” to pop radio beginning on May 29, and may see the music video for NCOE later this month as well!

Our featured photo for this month’s chat comes from Adam’s mini-concert of April 26th on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

It’s going to be an exciting month as we begin the Trespassing era, enjoy the chat!

Good morning! Some info on what to look for with the sales numbers next week (long post):

Hitsdailydouble (HDD) is the go to place for the early sales estimates:
    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com

That site will publish a “ONE-DAY SALES” article (look in the left hand column under Latest News) sometime late Wednesday morning or more likely early to mid Wednesday afternoon (I think they are on Eastern time). That article will give an expected range for the first week sales of various debut albums, based on one-day sales reports from various retailers, and considering pre-sale numbers as well. Given the other debuts for next week, Trespassing should definitely be covered in that article.

Looking back at recent HDD estimates compared to the actual first week sales numbers, they have been pretty close. Most artists have ended up with actual numbers slightly above (3-12% higher) than the high end of the estimated range. The exception was Carrie Underwood, who ended up with actual sales at 99% of the low end of the estimated range. I seem to remember from 2009 that HDD often overestimates Idol sales a bit due to heavier than normal pre-orders from the core fans.

A wild card for Adam next week will be the AI performance Thursday night. It is possible that he could get a boost from that which would not be shown in the early prediction. However, Carrie performed on AI at the same time relative to her album release (a couple of days after it dropped), and her final numbers still came in at the lower end of the predicted range. At best, I wouldn’t expect Adam’s actual sales to exceed the top end of the predicted range by much, if at all. So by sometime Wednesday afternoon we should have a pretty good idea of what the first week sales numbers will be.

Sometime on Monday May 21, the first actual sales numbers from the preceding week will be posted at HDD, at this page:
    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

The first update usually has only somewhere between 35 and 45 percent of the total sales reported. I’m not sure if there are intermediate updates, but the final sales numbers will be posted to the page above on Tuesday afternoon, May 22.

Here are the scheduled album releases for May 15:
Artist, Title, Prev album date, Prev 1st week, Prev total
    ADAM LAMBERT, TRESPASSING 11.29.09 198,000 837,000
    BEACH HOUSE, BLOOM 01.26.10 13,000 140,000
    BEST COAST, ONLY PLACE 07.27.10 10,000 85,000
    GLEE CAST, GRADUATION ALBUM 12.06.11 58,000 185,000
    GODSMACK, LIVE & INSPIRED 05.04.10 117,000 526,000
    LISA MARIE PRESLEY, STORM & GRACE 04.05.05 56,000 193,000
RYE RYE, GO! POP! BANG! DEBUT N/A N/A
    TENACIOUS D, RISE OF THE FENIX 11.14.06 81,000 420,000

By past performance, we would expect (hope!) that Trespassing will be the top selling new album for the week. We will see how high it can place on the chart against other albums already out there.

For reference, FYE debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, selling 198K its first week.

I would be very happy with 100K the first week for Trespassing. Anything below 50K is not good at all IMO. My prediction at this point is 60-70K.

Of course, the story doesn’t end with the 1st week sales, as we then see how sales hold up over time. FYE dropped very quickly after its opening week, plunging 74% to 51K in the second week. This was likely due to the continued AMA fallout, plus WWFM had not yet become established on the radio at that time. It seems that RCA is playing for long term sustained sales with Trespassing, with the late radio date of May 29 for NCOE. Hopefully this strategy will work out.

    Matt Carter mini review:

    http://cartermatt.com/16227/american-idol-notes-adam-lambert-phillip-phillips-and-skylar-laine/

For the Wednesday morning edition of “American Idol” notes, we have quite a bit to talk about — but we will begin with the exciting news that Adam Lambert’s full album “Trespassing” is now officially streaming online.

You can check out the full stream for the entire disc over at this link — just be ready in the process to be glued at the page for quite a while. Since we run a TV site here, don’t expect any sort of formal review for the album from a musical perspective — however, we will say that Adam has outdone himself here with the disc as a whole. It’s funky, fun, personal, and also shows perfectly that he as an artist is not only intent on creating real music, but that the end result was worth the excruciatingly long wait.

While a number of past idols have produced some great tunes, “Trespassing” may be from start to finish the strongest album to ever come out of the Fox reality show. There’s just so much to like … and so many reasons to dance. Now, just go and pre-order the whole album before it comes out May 15. You’ll be very happy with what you get in the mail.

This has no Adam content and is only connected because the song in the video is from an AI alum, but it is awesome and worth the watch! It is of young cancer patients in a Seattle Hospital “performing” to Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger.

  5. eywflyer says:

This album flows so well – the Popledge review is spot-on in that BTIKM (which is on my stream at the moment) bridges perfectly from the upbeat “side A” of the album to the much darker “side B”. Listened to in that context, to me the song has a certain uneasy vibe that fits perfectly in its place.

Now Broken English is on – this very strange song seems to have settled in as my favorite on the album. But then I like Nine Inch Nails too – BE may not be everyone’s cup of tea. When Adam first started talking about “dub step influences” I was not real enthused about the idea, but i love ’em in this song.

  6. Kradamour says:

    Morning peeps!
I just listened to the Nile Rogers Shady sessions…was going to wait but no one is home and I cranked them up…hoping that doesn’t “count” that I listened before the release!!!
    Confused Confused Confused

    DAMN I love that song!!!!!
    Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
and it is TOTALLY radio friendly for this market, unlike his other releases that have gone nowhere here, not even WWFM (and I am actually glad because I don’t think I could have stood hearing that multiple times every day on the radio…)
    Thinking Thinking Thinking
Gonna go chair dance while I grade papers….and gonna be STRONG until Wednesday so that I don’t listen to the actual whole song…might need some juice…

OMG! #1 at B&N! That is awesome!!! My heart skipped a beat this morning when there was a package from Amazon on my doorstep…but it was something else I had ordered. Major disappointment. I must be strong till Tuesday…

  9. rs says:

fwachdr, Amazon hasn’t even begun sending out the album yet. At least mine hasn’t ben shipped yet, and I ordered it in December! It says that they will send it on or about May 15th.

  10. little dutchess says:

rs I really enjoyed your reasoned and reasonable post about Adam on Chelsea Lately. Maybe I just couldn’t get over the constant gay talk (after so long), But I do agree that Adam did manage to get control of the conversation and the rest was a pretty good, if quick, interview

  11. JOJOSIE says:

I may have missed a post earlier but I just received Time and EW and there is a picture and quick talk interview in the Time magazine with Adam. It was nice that it took a little of the sting off from the other magazines article. The funny thing is that this is my last issue of EW and my notice reads, “Your subscription is about to drop dead”. I think I’ll send it back to them with the message that they can drop dead. I’m a very possitive person and not much bothers me, but EW did.

Jojosie, Which Time magazine? The one with the 3yr old “nursing”?

  14. glambotgram says:

My box set is sitting in UPS hub about 30 miles from here. I am hoping it gets sent to our delivery hub today and maybe, just maybe, I will get it Monday instead of Tuesday. LOL

  15. JOJOSIE says:

fwachdr yes, that issue. It’s not a long item but I like that it’s Time magazine and it might reach some that normally wouldn’t know what Adam is up to. I’m always amazed when I mention Adam, how many say “Oh I like him” but have no idea what he’s currently doing. I do my best to inform them. Most don’t mind getting an earful as it’s hard to just say a few words about Adam.

  16. Kradamour says:

glambotgram, can you call and pick it up? I often can here. I would def be at their doorstep in a hot minute…

  17. Kradamour says:

    fwachdr says:
Jojosie, Which Time magazine? The one with the 3yr old “nursing”?

    Yep, that’s the one.
I have such mixed feelings about that cover. Someday, that three-year-old will hit puberty and that photo will still be out there. I understand his mother’s militancy, but I wish that, I don’t know, their faces had been blocked out. If it makes people finally really, really talk about breastfeeding, that would be great. But if there is too much “ewww” factor (many people in the US are very uncomfortable with extended nursing), it just backfires. And the overall context of the article wasn’t breastfeeding except as a part of a larger concept.
Okay enough angst over the Time cover!
The little item about Adam was very nice.
And I agree that it is especially nice to have the item in a very widely-read magazine where peeps can just stumble upon the information and the nice recent photo.

rs, that is exactly the way I saw the Chelsea interview, and I have watched it several times now. She is who she is, guys. She ain’t Barbara Walters and her audience ain’t wearing pearls.

Maybe I should say former nonfan!

  19. Kradamour says:

nekkid, what I especially liked about thata review is that it was written not really by a nonfan, but by someone who wanted to be a fan of the amazing voice but was turned off. I think that he is not at all alone in that, and I am hoping that a lot of peeps who tried to love Adam and did love his voice but were turned away by (fill in the blank: AMAs, weird cover art, “oversinging” – whatever that is, overproduction, whatever…) will give this a listen based on a review, a recommendation by a friend, an item in Time magazine, a performance on GMA…

Another nice review, this one from Italy. Only 3 out of 5 stars, but they did like the album.

luval, that is what worries me too. I have asked a few friends on twitter to report her/him and block her, maybe that way she/he gets the message that it is not “cute” or “funny” to post this – media or just other tweeters could make such a mess for Adam.
Pls, guys, if you are on Twitter, report for spam and block @Sulwen.
If you don’t know how, it’s easy. Search for him/her in the twitter search box, then when her little page comes up, click on the arrow by the little right hand box that has a head outline on it and a little menu comes down. If you click on “report for spam” it reports and blocks simultaneously.

  22. riskylady says:

rs, so nice to see you posting (she is a very wise woman, guys).
I totally agree with everything you said about the Chelsea interview.
The first half of the show went completely over my head, all references lost, not being a regular viewer.
But I love that she let Adam get his point across about being not just the gay guy, but a human singing about universal life situations – she even agreed with him and echoed his statement, saying that when you listen to music you apply it to your own life and it should be universal. Wow! The few times I’ve seen her, never actually saw her be serious like that.
And he got to talk about his music, songs for Sauli, Queen, Elton AND being out before and during Idol – all good.
On a shallow note, looked gorgeous and TALL! And he didn’t cheat, was wearing regular sole boots!!
But one thing I loved the most – his full out laugh, not once but several times. Sounded soooooo good.

  23. nkd says:

What I feel is different about this album, and it comes through while listening, is Adam’s connection to it. Of course he would be more connected than he was rushing to record FYE as he was involved in every aspect of it’s creation.
You can hear it and feel it, the essence of Adam.

riskylady…Thanks for that “how to block” info on Twitter. I went to her twitter name but then didn’t know what to do. So should I do it now even though she may not have done anything today?

  29. riskylady says:

luval – I would, unless you’re planning to follow her. She has the pic, she might want to throw it out there again. Mainly what we want by blocking is to hopefully get her attention, and maybe Twitter’s. That pic violates their terms of use, as well as not being flattering to Adam at all!

    Nice article, with GREAT artwork!!!

Someday, that three-year-old will hit puberty and that photo will still be out there.

I agree with Kradamour that this is the real problem with the cover. It will come back to haunt that kid. I can’t even imagine the grief it would cause if something like this were to surface about my 17 yr. old grandson. They are so sensitive about what their peers think and embarrassed by any and everything.

  31. luval says:

    ok riskylady…did it!!!

  32. milwlovesadam says:

Loving the art in that link Riskylady!! And the review too.

I saw that MJ dropped the hammer on yesterday’s thread. Closed it.

rs: I agree with your post about Chelsea, and Kradamour too.
I watched it again this morning, hahaha, hubby was mowing the lawn, and what’s a Bert to do? Anyway, she was more polite to him than to most of her guests. I actually loved the juicing talk.

Oh, and that Glamberts go shopping bit was really cute. I just love those. The part where she’s sitting on his hand was so true life! Wouldn’t we all just gaze like that?

  33. glambotgram says:

Another really great and really long Sound Bath article by Angelina Kalahari, comparing Adam’s and Freddie’s voices and styles. Be prepared to spend about an hour.

Love the title, His 3 gems. Good thing she didn’t say jewels. lol

Corner is looking nice with all this yellow and black.

  34. Kradamour says:

thanks, glambotgram, for that soundbath…I hadn’t heard the Freddie Mercury versions and hearing them, with the analysis, was very, very interesting.

Of course one of the comments posted DID go “there” lol…

And now I am off to read the Rolling Stone that my son just brought in from the mail and handed to me – “Adam Lambert’s Emotional Rescue”…
    Heart

ETA: Rolling Stone does impressive interviews, IMHO. Not just of Adam – but I think they treat him well, including this interview – but of everyone. I had never read an issue of RS pre-Adam, assumed it was a rag without journalistic talent.
I find that I really enjoy reading it, and the political interviews are as worthwhile as anything out there.
Another positive thing to come from Adam stanning!

  35. milwlovesadam says:

Kradamour, RS is known for excellent journalism. They have won teh Pulitzer many times for investigative journalism. I think. They won one last year for exposing a Pentagon scandal. They don’t do Rock and Roll sleeze. They are a music magazine with much cred. I have been reading it for probably 30 years. I have subscribed for at least 20. I just love it.

And now that I’m 30, I appreciate the political articles even more. And, it keeps me up to speed on both old time rock and roll, and new trends.

I just love it. Now, Mr. Mailman, where is mine? It has a certain someone in it….

  36. eywflyer says:

rs and fwachdr, my deluxe CD (ordered on May 4) has not shipped yet either. Just had a chat with Amazon customer service and was told the following:

Me: Wanted to check why my order hasn’t shipped yet. Placed order on May 4th, it’s now afternoon of May 12th and the CD is supposed to arrive on May 15th. Paid extra for two day shipping because the order screen said I would receive the CD on May 15th if I did so. Would have expected it to ship by now if I’m going to receive it on May 15th.

Amazon: Can you hold for a minute or two while I research this for you?

Amazon: Thanks for waiting, I am really sorry for the concern you are facing at the moment, As I can see that the item you have placed is not in stock with us that is why it is taking time.

Me: I see. Do you know when it will be in stock?

Amazon: I am really sorry as we do not have much information regarding this. But I will make sure that the item will be in stock as soon as possible as I am forwarding this to our concern team.

Me: Ok – please forward to them that I am quite disappointed in amazon for promising an item that they are unable to deliver at the expected time. Especially as I paid extra for two day shipping in order to receive the item on May 15. I would appreciate someone from the concern team contacting me about this as soon as possible, can you forward my contact info to them?

Amazon: sure, they will get in touch with you via e-mail.

So there you have it. Sounds like Amazon doesn’t know when the CD will be in stock. This sucks as I was going to order from AO but went with Amazon instead as they were a bit cheaper. I leave town on Thursday for 10 days, so too late to get an AO order here at this point. Will either have to order from AO and have it delivered to my parents place, or go out looking for a CD here in Key West on Tuesday.

Oh well – at least I can get it from Itunes on Tuesday for my phone. I’m sure I can find a CD either here or while visiting my parents.

ETA: on the bright side, the fact that Amazon has run out of stock is a good sign for the sales numbers Smile

  37. luval says:

Sorry about that eywflyer. Goes to show you the benefits of ordering dozens of copies from everywhere on earth to be sure to get at least one! Smile

eta: I ordered a couple from Amazon too. At least now we know why the delay. They have none!!

    Mail comes. RS. Yay!

Ogle drool stare read about Adam. Ogle drool stare read some more.

    UPS truck arrives.

Rush out like a mad-woman in my PJ’s ( Hey, I’m not dressed yet? OK? I’ve been kinda busy today in my stanning).

Man in Brown gives moi an armload of special deliveries.

Rush in , carefully open CD/DVD , ogle drool stare ogle drool stare ogle drool stare at everything. Lyrics. Pictures. Liner notes. I know, I have already seen it because I am immature and impatient and need instant gratification, but having the real deal in my hands will be just, will be just, well , NIRVANA.

Somehow manage to get dressed. Brush teeth. Go to car. Insert CD into best sound system we own. Drive. I don’t care where. Just drive. Volume up to 11. Cruising. Oh, I’m at my beach. OMG. Trespassing at my beach. Waves, sun and sound.

Drive home, Runnin over and over ….

Get home and scramble up some dinner.

Announce that I will be on my treadmill. Yessss. My treadmill, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Insert making of DVD. Start walking, and watch ogle drool watch ogle drool. Walk that walk like I don’t give a f*ck…

    Finish.– Walking. You perverts!!

Come here to catch up on the Billboard stream Q&A. Stare ogle and drool. Repeat.

Now, how is anybody else planning on spending their Monday?

It only takes about a week for mail to get here from the States. Maybe they only plan to get them in stock on the 15th. I am so glad I ordered one from AO also. I got a notice from them that they sent it out on May 5th, so we will see how long it takes to get here. There are very few music stores here selling cds, but I did get FYE before Blockbuster Video closed dowm. Who knows how long it will be before Trespassing gets to the stores here? Before that I will have already bought a couple of copies of the UK edition for myself and mr.

ANOTHER favorable review, this one from Sweden’s largest newspaper:
    http://i.imgur.com/aRuZv.png

    translation

He has both soul and personality
It would’ve been so easy to dismiss Adam Lambert as yet another prior
“American Idol” participant who’s desperately trying to stay relevant
with the help of earwormy hits and ambitious styling. But the fact is
that you can’t ignore that this guy actually have something special. We
can call it talent. The songs, which could have passed by as tiresome
bubblegum pop, instead have both soul and personality thanks to
Lambert’s rocky but still tender voice. In addition he has the ability
to build up emotion in his melodies, without getting stuck in long
boring sections. I don’t want to go as far as to call him a male Kelly
Clarkson, but he’s without a doubt awesome at managing his talent – even
    when the “Idol”-sign stops shining.

Not fond of the Kelly comment as I think Adam is a superior singer, but could be worse…..
