BTIKM numbers update:
Itunes: #467 overall, #129 Pop
Sales: no hard download numbers for the last several weeks, as Idol Chatter hasn’t posted them for the song since late January.
Airplay:

#36 (no change)
29 spins (week ago 21)
+8 weekly move
Hot AC:
#25 (-1 position thanks to the new Adele song which passed it)
856 spins (week ago 744)
+112 weekly move
Top 40:
Last update on Saturday had the song at #62 and starting to lose spins, no update has been posted since.
The next big thing to watch will be the VH1 countdown Saturday morning. Both WWFM and IIHY jumped 10 spots in their second week on the countdown (WWFM 11-1, IIHY 20-10). BTIKM debuted last week at #17.
RCA must be spending a lot of the promo budget on this extensive radio station tour for Adam, with BTIKM still as the single they are pushing. Not sure if they still think this single is going to perform well enough to be worth it, or they are laying the groundwork for the next single, just laying the groundwork for the album, or what. At this point the song remains on a trajectory of a moderate hit at best on Hot AC, and an outright flop on Pop. That trajectory could still change due to a combination of VH1, slowly increasing Hot AC airplay and continued promo, but it’s been a slow slog so far.
Not trying to be negative here, just calling it as I see it. I do worry that a relatively weak lead single will result in first week album sales of less than 100K, and God knows all the people who dislike Adam would love to jump all over numbers like that. I would speculate that there is some intense debate going on behind the scenes right now at RCA and Adam’s management deciding how to proceed.
Has anyone seen news of Adam coming to South Florida on this radio tour? I just finished up ten night shifts in a row and haven’t caught up yet.
Thanks for all that info, eywflyer. If one tenth of his twitter followers buy his album I’ll be thrilled. But as I said a bazillion times in the past, illegal downloading is the bane of a musician’s career. People were laughing at me at work the other day. Professional Adults! saying they never ever buy music, and will never buy music. They don’t care that it’s stealing. “They make enough money” is what I hear. I answer “how”? Usually the subject changes after that.
eta: in regards to VH1, my bet is that it will MAYBE jump one or two numbers. That is it. Doesn’t matter that we are voting like crazy.

I’m really curious about this week VH1 countdown,seems like awfully lot of fans are voting for Adam, but I don’t think that just voting counts at the end of the day.
We all know that Adam will perform on Idol,and I hope that he will be at his second sigle at that time, instead of wasting such a promotion for a single that is not doing as great as we all wish it would..

OK, so BTIKM is not connecting, apparently no matter how many radio stations he is visiting. Doesn’t mean the second single or third single will either. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, just looking at the worst scenario. No where to go but up after that. And of course any tour he may have will be totally sold out. That’s a given I think.
Oksana and luval, I think we are quickly getting to the point that a decision has to be made on BTIKM. Every day that passes, Adam visits more radio stations while still pushing BTIKM instead of something else. Also the time required to push out another single would result in the album being delayed into at least May or later, even if they moved to a new single right now. I agree that a prime performance slot on Idol should not be used on a single that isn’t performing well.
It is possible that RCA has said they aren’t going to spend the $$$ for a second single before the album release (another music video, promo push etc) and the album is going to have to sink or swim (at least initially) with BTIKM out front. If that is the case, they should go ahead and release the album soon, waiting another couple of months probably won’t help.
Again, I hope you guys don’t feel that I am being unduly negative. I just haven’t understood the promo strategy of this from the start. Dropping the single on Itunes right before Christmas, weeks ahead of the radio impact date (therefore dissipating any sales momentum before airplay started), then sending Adam to Europe for 2 weeks right when the song started getting US airplay, now sending him on this huge radio station tour that probably should have been done several weeks ago.

Besides that, everything seems to be done all over the place. How about his new managment company (forgot their name) that Adam was so enthusiastic about? What is their part in launching his new music?
Well, that would certainly be another good reason for Adam to be done with Monte as he clearly is. In that case they were screwed, as it would not have been possible to get any airplay started then right in the depths of the Christmas freeze. Still don’t understand why they sent Adam to Europe in late Jan & early Feb instead of having him do the radio promo tour then, when the song had just been released.
I believe that these promo tours have to be planned a long time in advance, so maybe it wasn’t so easy to change the whole timing setup..

eywflyer: I see no negativity. Just common sense statements of what may be. I love to hear your opinions, especially the part about “they should go ahead and release the album soon”. Nothing to lose, hopefully something to gain.
At least the song does seem to be doing pretty well outside the US. I guess we have to be patient and wait for the radio promo to be finished to get a real reading. There is that April performance on NewNowNext show, and two radio concerts in May. Maybe they’re just letting it gradually improve while using the promo to really get the word out about the album and keep Adam pretty visible.

I get so stressed reading all the stats on Adam’s single, largely because I don’t understand how the music business works these days. It seems so freaking formulaic. Why don’t they put another single out now, like Trespassing or Cuckoo which sound like they would be hits? Does anybody really care if the album is delayed if his music is getting airplay?

Hi, all. As usual, thanks to rainbowgal for all the links and to eywflyer for everything you do for this site! I was just reading all of the different perspectives regarding BTIKM and wanted to add my (probably really naive) take on the whole situation. From the get-go I haven’t felt like they were promoting this specific single as much as they are the entirety of the upcoming album. From the Christmas release date to the wanky European promo tour that lined up with the US single release, everything has come off a little Helter Skelter. Through all of this, though, Adam has come off as super elated and totally jacked about all of it, yet he’s scarcely tweeted anything about BTIKM specifically — I mean, he stands by the song and says he loves it, but most of his personal squeeing seems to be mostly about what’s to come. One of the UK radio guys classified BTIKM as something like a “soft” intro to the album, and that’s stuck with me throughout all of this. I guess what I’m wondering is if they never really sold this specific song to Top 40 stations. For example, he performed with Z100, which played the heck out of WWFM, a song not entirely dissimilar from BTIKM, yet they don’t seem to have BTIKM on rotation at all (unless someone knows something I’ve missed!) Figuring that Adam appeared there as part of some deal (since such deals seem to come as payment for appearances), I’m wondering if the payoff (at Z100 and possibly other stations, as well) wasn’t intended to be with BTIKM but, instead, will be used on an upcoming, much more obviously “Pop-friendly” single? According to Shoshanna, BTIKM is a get-acquainted single there (she used some other descriptor, but that’s essentially what I gathered), and maybe, in the minds of his management/marketing people in the US, it was supposed to be kind of a “get re-acquainted” single here. Sure, they’re marketing it, but I get the sense throughout it all that they’re just really presenting a whole re-branding of Adam before hitting the airwaves with the song(s) they really think can define him as an artist. I’m probably delusional, but these are the thoughts that go through my head when I try to understand the whole marketing strategy.

I just scored tix this afternoon with 94.7 as well. I don’t even think I was the ninth caller. The DJ (Darik Kristofer) is such a sweetheart. We chatted for a while, and he gave me the tickets!!! LOL He said someone would be contacting me within 24 hours to give me all the details. He further mentioned that they want to keep these details private, so that uninvited Glamberts don’t show up. Ha…. I wonder what would make them worry about that?!?!

teri63: thank you for your detailed analysis. It is a more positive interpretation of the facts, but I think it has a lot of merit. I cannot for the life of me figure out their strategies, and I have often been sitting here thinking that I could have done a better job picking singles and drop dates than the pros. Not that I know anything. It just drives me up the walls to even think that a weaker single is put out first and with such odd timing when stronger ones are available. In the same way I never understood Aftermath over Sleepwalker.
