Agree about the amount of DC airtime on Idol, HK fan but it was mainly a matter of Idol being down to 8 contestants and having to fill 2 hours. Adam and Chris shared the duties, had Randy there the whole time and were working with 13 contestants.
David’s mentoring role followed the old format, before Rickey was so omnipresent. A celebrity by the piano for each contestant in a total one-on-one. Adam did that in Season 9 Elvis week.
This week’s add-in was David’s leading role at the actual on-stage dress rehearsal. My guess is he unconsciously took over from Randy somewhere in the middle (not hard to do) and it made such good TV they left his parts in. Adam and Chris were a bit more deferential to Randy but this was definitely better for the contestants. It really made Randy look lost.

Don’t know why I should feel sorry for Randy but I do. His time is gone and he should step away. There must be something else for him to do in the background at Idol.

I feel sorry for Randy, too. The mentoring slot isn’t in his wheelhouse, though, and it looks as though his heart isn’t in it.
