I guess I just find it so hard to understand why so many Americans think guns are OK, and that the answer to all these shootings is to arm themselves with more guns.
Other countries that have much stricter gun laws don’t have all these mass shootings. Yes, occasionally it happens, like in Dunblane, and the one in Norway….but they are isolated cases, maybe once in 30 years or something, there seems to be one every week in the US. But I remember reading the numbers of people killed by guns in the US compared to other countries…the statistics were staggering.
If someone wants to go on a killing spree, then they will get a gun, we all know that, but why make it so easy for them.

I’m with you HK. Hand guns and automatic weapons are not allowed here. Our police don’t carry weapons. Of course there are occasional shootings here and we have also have a few mass shootings. However , I don’t know anyone who owns a gun. The only (legal)reason I can think of is for hunting purposes.

Another problem tangent to the gun issue and all the violence we seem to see weekly in this country is our unwillingness to treat mental illness until something goes so wrong it can’t be ignored. Believe it was Reagan who sort of decommissioned mental hospitals, probably believing people shouldn’t be “warehoused”. But nothing was put in place to take care of these folks and many are homeless, or warily watched by family members, and free to act on their demons. Ok, rant over!

This morning they were telling people there was a dangerous gunman loose in West Hollywood, and people should stay in their homes.
Here in Miami it’s drive-by shootings with Ak-47s, and domestic violence DAILY. So easy to get weapons, gun shows, on line, no checking. Oh, we also have many kids killed by other kids with parents’ guns.
Adam expressed an opinion like many others, why not? I agree with him, others disagree. He’s getting some hate, but doesn’t look like a gate to me. Not the way things are going….

I agree with Adam. Guns just aren’t necessary in every day life.
There was just a 10 year old girl here, in the city, shot on her playground at school because two “thugs” with guns had an altercation on the sidewalk there. She is in critical condition with a shot to the head. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There have been several newsworthy gun related stories in Southern Cali. lately. I don’t blame Adam for sounding off.
In other news, one of my co-workers lives a block away from where those two 12 year old girls stabbed their friend 19 times. The victim is my boss’ cousin. UNREAL.
I’d rather be happy for the news out of my state with gay marriage. Close to 400 couples married now.
HKfan & Kiwi, I agree the gun laws in the US are ridiculous. The NRA contributes huge sums to the Republican party who favors them supporting lax gun laws. It’s become “The Wild West!” Children sre getting shot every day because the adults carelessly leave them accessable to them. Japan has excellent strict gun laws with people annually being checked for mental stability, arrest records, etc. There are so many lunatics here that can’t wait to shoot something.
Why all the killing? Why? Makes me so sad especially for the kids. I am glad Adam spoke up. I wish more celebrities would. There was a knife murder in my area. I locked the doors and I have 4 dogs. Suspect is on the loose and armed and dangerous. I don’t trust a soul. No I don’t.

So envious of those of you with your “Adam moments”. At Scrabble last night a few of us were talking about the Rolling Stones concert and how we wished we had gone and one woman said that she didn’t like these “nostalgia” shows. She had seen Frank Sinatra and it was very disappointing! I said that I am going to see Queen and she just sort of shrugged. I said that they are singing performing with a 32 year old singer and that I had seen them together in London two years ago and that they were fantastic. I am sure that she has never heard of Adam, like most people here.
Thank goodness for ALL and all of you. Otherwise I would be totally lost here.

I totally agree with Adam’s views. I live in the Middle East and I am getting concerned about traveling to the United States next month. At least here I know a bit what to watch out for in order to protect myself, and shootings aren’t totally random.
We have a gun problem in Canada as well, though it is not as dire as the US problem. There was a very high-profile shooting in Moncton New Brunswick earlier this week. Three Mounties were killed.
The killer was shouting on about the “right to bear arms” during his rampage. The Canadian constitution includes no such guarantee, which begs the question: what is he watching on TV? (I didn’t know this but apparently there have been several appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada to add the “right to bear arms.” The court ruled that owning a gun is a privilege, not a right.”)
I don’t understand why gun registries are such a contentious issue (in both countries). People register cars and have drivers licenses and nobody gets upset about that. It is all about having respect for the car and the specialized knowledge needed to own and operate one. Don’t guns require the same kind of respect?
NVM, I do appreciate that Adam spoke out on this and imagine that Neil has the capacity to be quite vocal if Adam needs any defending.
