As July ends, so does a fantastic series of concerts by Queen and Adam across North America. It will be a summer that many ALLers will never forget! Q+AL take a few weeks break before heading off to Asia and then for concerts Down Under. If the reception there is anything like it was here, Q+AL can expect to get some major loving!

Enjoy the chat!

Really appreciate all this tech discussion, smalls, as I have noticed how often he adjusts the monitors (but, as some have noted, less now than in the past). These new ear monitors perhaps?

luval, and others, that teeny little extra hole has been there for years, usually either empty or with a teeny diamond stud in it. I love that he put a teeny infinity in it.

    These new ear monitors perhaps?

Perhaps so, ulti. And from the article luval posted and what risky highlighted… as well as our own observations, it appears like the sound crew has strived to tailor the equipment/devices for Adam and successfully obtain the right mix for him.

As if I wasn’t so delighted with the whole QAL production already! We just keep learning more & more things about all of them that really impress me.

Just got back from my whirlwind trip to Chicago. So much great discussion here to catch up on.

First, rs – I carry the beautiful Hamsa that you gave me in my purse, so it’s always with me. I even double checked before I left for Chicago that I had it with me. Thank you so much for this gift of love and caring. I love Adam’s new shirt with the big Hamsa on it. Sending you my thoughts and fervent hopes for peace and security in your troubled corner of the world.

I loved reading the techie article about all of the audio stuff. Sooo interesting. It really broadened my understanding of the issues. smalls – thank you so much for your really helpful and informative posts, too. Loved hearing more detail from your experienced perspective!

Learning more about all this, it really brings home to me that there are a ton of technical issues involved in a show like this and for a singer like Adam. As a couple of people said on twitter, Adam has a lot more to do than just show up, look gorgeous, be sexy and charming, and open his mouth and sing. He still has to do all of those things, of course, but while he’s using his body and face to give us all of those amazing visuals and projecting his charismatic personality, he’s also deep into the sound mix, the lyrics, the dynamics, the notes, the emotion of the song, and how he wants to use his voice to convey everything he wants to express to us with that song. Add to that the perfectionism with which he approaches all of the technical aspects of the sound issues, and it really makes me respect and appreciate him, his talent, his high standards, and his intelligence even more.

And yes, whenever I think of sound issues, my mind goes back to that show at the National Harbor and the issues Adam had with the sound there, especially on IIHY. He was having a fit, and we were just having a great time enjoying his presence, his spiked shorts, the beautiful view, and the free food. Good times! Smile (That was also the first time I met so many of you east coasters, so that made it special for me, too. Heart)

smalls – that is very very cool that you have been a professional singer! What kind of music, what kind of band, and what was your role? I love to sing and to be surrounded by beautiful voices, and I sing in a couple of choirs. But I’m nowhere near good enough to think about singing professionally! I appreciate very much you bringing your experience and knowledge as a pro singer here to help us learn more. I hope you share more with us!

Speaking of sound, I agree with you all about how stellar the sound has been for these Queen shows, and what that must mean regarding the caliber of the people involved and their careful attention to all of the technical details. Really really impressive all around.

mils – you mentioned the Bruno Mars show some of you saw in Toronto. I too saw Bruno’s show here when it came through town last week. Great show! Really enjoyed it a lot. But the sound was very loud and very muddled. I thought it was our venue, since they designed our arena to be loud and echo-y on purpose (UO crowds are famous for being loud Smile ), but given that you had the same issues in Toronto, it makes me wonder if it wasn’t just the venue.

Somebody upthread mentioned Nico and Vinz, the opening act for Bruno. I had never heard of them before but I enjoyed them too – they were fun and quite good.

HK Fan – thanks for posting that follow-up article from Pressparty. Although it’s just re-stating the original article, at least now I know that FOH means “front of house.” I had wondered what FOH stood for. So what exactly does “front of house” mean? Is that the term for the sound mix that the audience hears?

Good call, luval, you’re right! I did a quick google search. The FOH engineer sits at the console in the sound booth out in the audience and mixes the sound that the audience hears. The monitor engineer sits at a console on the side of the stage and mixes the sound that the musicians hear in their onstage or in-ear monitors.

Here are a few short but good articles that explain more about what FOH and monitor engineers do:

    smalls? Ron? Smile

Hi cwm! Yes, that’s exactly right. It’s the mix and sound balance that the audience hears. Then there are sound engineers that focus only on back fold (or stage sound) where the musicians are.

Interestingly, the quote that luval posted from the engineer that works with Adam (Stokes) suggests that he/she is the fold sound (earpiece, stage monitors)tech (providing different mix/balance than the front or audience mix), but who is actually engineering a front (FOH) mix for Adam to come through his earpiece.
Therein lies the “studio effect” advantage for a singer; as studio recording sound balance is very similar.
In very simplistic example, it’s a bit like singing with the radio or stereo in context of vocal to band/music balance. Voice (singer) in foreground, music mix (band) in background. Helps the singer hear more of what the audience hears, but also siphons his own voice in the foreground to hear closely directly from the earpiece for vocal accuracy. The band receives similar benefit from the sound monitors on stage, although not with the same balance mix & precision as with the earpiece.

What an extraordinary sound crew. It appears Queen spared no expense.
Bet Adam is LOVING this. Makes me also wonder something I’ve wondered for a while now… How will he be able to adjust back his production, sound crews, musicians after being firmly a part of the creme dela creme?
Going to be interesting to watch and see… Smile

Anyway… hope this helped, though I am fairly limited (sorry), in that I primarily just offer a vocalist’s side of things. I have some awareness/know-how regarding production & live sound from recording and touring years, but limited – thankfully, as it’s very technical)

Would love to hear Ron weigh in with his knowledge and experience too.
I always love to learn more. Smile

PS/ETA… Looks like some good links have been posted about all this.
I haven’t read them yet and can hardly wait to read them, myself.
They will likely explain way better than I can.
