As July ends, so does a fantastic series of concerts by Queen and Adam across North America. It will be a summer that many ALLers will never forget! Q+AL take a few weeks break before heading off to Asia and then for concerts Down Under. If the reception there is anything like it was here, Q+AL can expect to get some major loving!

Enjoy the chat!

    More about Adam’s shirt. . . .
Maybe there is more to his wearing it?

In recent years, activists for peace in the Middle East have adopted the hamsa hand to display hope, peace and prosperity.

    http://misstlv.myshopify.com/blogs/news/6859710-what-does-the-hamsa-hand-mean

Has some Jewish & Middle Eastern origins –

    The Hamsa Prayer

    Let no sadness come
    to this heart
    Let no trouble come
    to these arms
    Let no conflict come
    to these eyes
Let my soul be filled with the blessing of joy of peace.

“The Hamsa is an ancient Middle Eastern amulet
symbolizing the Hand of God. In all faiths it is a protective sign.
It brings it’s owner happiness, luck, health, and good fortune.”

Great article! All about the in’s and out’s of the technical side of the tour.

When Lambert goes out playing his own music, he likes his stage quiet. There are no guitar cabinets, certainly no wedges, and even his drummer’s kit has more padding.

Talks about the engineers, and the entire technical crew. Great reading IMO

“Stokes has a history with Lambert, having been his FOH for the singer/songwriter’s own shows. “He is an amazing singer and has an amazing range and pitch. I work for k.d. lang a lot, and she, too, has an amazing range and pitch. Really good singers have really good hearing!” he laughs. “They hear subtle details more than average singers, and consequently, they have more specific needs. There’s not a static mix that will make them comfortable or happy through a whole show or even a whole song. When they go in the higher register, you need to ride a fader or EQ a bit, for example.”

smalls, you are still a newbie here and don’t know our history with hamsas. I gave Adam a beautiful one from here when I met him (M&G at the Hard Rock in Florida before my first concert). Since the first QAL concerts in London I have brought gifts of Hamsa bracelets and/or key chains whenever I have met ALLers and other lovely Glamberts (except for this time when I brought infinity bracelets for those who already had hamsas). Hopefully I will meet you and I will be able to give you one in person. By the way, I had one for ulti, too, but we never connected in Merriweather Big Frown .

Hamsa means “five” for the five fingers of a hand and it is meant as a protection to ward off the evil eye. Adam has had a number of hamsa necklaces, car ornaments, etc., and now this shirt. I really want to know what the Arabic writing on the bottom says
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Was in the middle of writing this and the sirens went off, for the first time since I came home, and I went down to the bomb shelter in my building. Hamas took credit for the firing on Jerusalem, but they have been shooting nonstop at Israel for hours. I heard the boom of the rocket being shot down by Iron Dome. Thank goodness for that because I just heard that it was aimed near my neighborhood.

Personally I don’t find the ice challenge amusing as it sometimes has been turning into a publicity stunt for many celebrities (talked about on Access Hollywood last night). But I guess if it makes money for charity it’s a good thing.

Celebrity involvement can be a positive force. It brings more awareness to the cause.

Washington, D.C. (August 19, 2014) — As of Tuesday, August 19, The ALS Association has received $22.9 million in donations compared to $1.9 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 19). These donations have come from existing donors and 453,210 new donors to The Association.

    http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-challenge-081914.html

They did the icebucket challenge last year but without as much celebrity involvement. Huge increase in donations this year.

I guess my point is, whatever the publicity stunt aspect is, it’s bringing in the donations.

luval I enjoyed the sound tech article too! The sound quality and mix is much more complicated than I realized. Queen’s sound crew is obviously top notch and have been doing a really good job. Those of us who were at the May 2012 radio concert at the National Harbor Center in Maryland are well aware of what can result when the sound crew is drunk or otherwise impaired. Poor Adam! They were making him crazy, but he was so adorable in his spikey shorts that we fans didn’t care.

    rs, please stay safe.

luval, and others, that teeny little extra hole has been there for years, usually either empty or with a teeny diamond stud in it. I love that he put a teeny infinity in it.

I have also spoken about the hamsa here. Without knowing that rs had given him one on GN, I also gave him one in Hawaii. We figured it out later!! Great minds think alike. I carry a hamsa or two every day on me, and have many in my jewelry.

I was at a friend’s house the other day who is a true collector, she has hundreds of them on a wall in her home, no two alike. It’s like a museum of Hamsot. It is just gorgeous.

  28. milwlovesadam says:

I also liked that tech article, thanks for posting. I think I saw our riskylady there….and I share the feeling. I never needed my earplugs for QAL. I had to wear mine at Bruno, or I would be deaf for sure. Awful sound mixing, just too dang loud and unclear. In the same venue.

Okay guys, so here is my motherly and professional interpretation of what Adam is hearing in his earpieces: He’s damaging his hearing. By having real sound mixed in, by hearing what we hear, at a high volume right in his ears = hearing loss in the future. No doubt about it.

Most professional musicians wear In The Ears to guide their performance, and to stay on key, etc. The earpieces are also designed as hearing protectors.

If Adam’s are specially designed to give him real performance sound, crikey, I just hope the designers also are giving him hearing protection. Because high pitches at high intensity will cause hearing loss.

When performing, Lamberts seems to be constantly adjusting his ear monitors. I don’t see other performers do that. Please explain for a non-techie.

This was the first comment on that tech article which you may have read. But so far no one has answered. Wish they would!! I know I’ve been wondering about this. My drummer friend immediately noticed it in videos I’ve sent him. I’ll try and keep an eye out to see if they eventually address it.

  30. milwlovesadam says:

The earpieces become loose when he sings. Every time you open your mouth the jaw moves.

Or, his are just not fitted properly.

Or, he is trying to manually adjust something on them.

    Or, he is nervous.

    Or, he is sweaty.

Or, he found his lost bhindi in there.

Or, he still has GN glitter stuck in his ears.

    Or, he hears voices.

Or, he is such a fracking perfectionist that he doesn’t even like the sound of his own voice.

  31. mmm222 says:

From what I have observed, Adam has been adjusting his ear monitors far less during the QAL concerts than he has during his solo concerts.

  34. Kiwi says:

The in-ear pieces do have a volume control on them, much like a hearing aid. I noticed it at the beginning of the tour but I haven’t seen Adam doing it so much as the tour has progressed. It must be an adjustment for him singing in front of the decibels that Queen manages. The tech article above explains that his shows are very low volume in comparison.

I am surprised by how much I miss my son…this is the first time that he has gone back to school that I wasn’t actually a little bit relieved! But he has turned into a very interesting conversationalist and now we will be able to discuss legal issues, I will love that!

The earpiece enables Adam to hear himself. When one is on stage singing, the band is so loud a singer literally cannot himself, even with the mic it’s not enough.
The ear pieces give a “studio” type balance and projects Adam’s voice specifically to his own ears. Musicians only don’t need it (usually) because when a note is played via device it’s reliable and going to come through exactly as the note, whether one can hear it super clearly or not. Singers, on the other hand are at the mercy of their own ears or (via a capella, acoustic) or with a system in louder, full band performances that will siphon what is projected into his mic and into his ear piece without sound distortion.

In the old days (when singers didn’t dance and move as much or have all the other effects they do now) people used specific monitors on stage for this, but technology is better and for a rock band, that’s not practical. This is one main reason why some frontmen/women and other singers don’t sound as good live. They can’t hear themselves as well.
Adam, however doesn’t have that luxury.
And many venues do not have the acoustics designed for musical performances (such as an opera house, where the and/or cathedral where singers can hear their voice without help because of the design).

One reasons, imo, why this person has not seen others performers wearing them is because Adam’s career is based upon his extraordinary voice. (he doesn’t play an instrument in his performances, for example. He is a true SINGER.) That is his bread and butter. He does not use track overs or dubbing on his live performances to sing along with as other artists do.
Other artists also have other props, dance routines, etc. and things that can overcompensate for poor singing live. These singers, however, are not known for their singing, per se.
Any major vocalist known for their “power-house” singing style either wears an earpiece, or does their sets stripped down (Adelle, for example).
Adam has to be especially on target because he does things with his voice that most don’t do, and has to be spot on every time. He has no luxury for not hearing himself very well. His flawless execution of delivery requires it and his dazzling effects are his money making trademarks.

… Just offering what few things that I know. Maybe other research can shed more light on it, because there is plenty I definitely don’t know and I’ve been out of the biz for a while Smile

  37. luval says:

Well, I’ve deleted my ear-piece question. It’s really not that important. Moving on. All is good. Smile

  38. Kradamour says:

smalls, thank you for that explanation.
I have been particularly struck (as have the rest of us) by how involved Adam is in the sound production aspects of his performances, especially as compared to other performers.

mmm, that National Harbor performance was memorable for a whole variety of reasons, but Adam’s frustration with the sound was definitely right up there – but everyone was having so much fun that I think even Adam gave up and just went with it by the end.
Those spikey shorts! the safety pin lady! free bags of popchips being distrubited like manna to the crowd! (I sometimes buy them now in memory of that concert, they are actually pretty good!) The boats going by on the Potomac behind the stage and slowing down to hear Adam!
    Yes
That was right after Wilkes Barre.
    Good times!

  39. asmallworld says:

luval… Because it’s not a perfect fit… much like ear phones. It’s similar to trying to push earphones in closer or keep adjusting them when there is loud noise around and one is listening to something within the earphones.

Different things can affect the precise hearing level and detail in which someone hears through those earpieces: Venue, the band (and their physical stage position & sound distortion for the singer), the song itself & it’s specific vocal demands on a singer and what he plans on doing with his voice, and the sound technicians and how quickly they can adjust levels and adapt to the variable changes a premium singer makes and needs. Adam is so exacting in his hearing tones & singing…(this is one reason his pitch & range so good and part of what makes him extraordinary) he has to hear at a certain precision & quality each moment. If it’s off just a little bit in his hearing, even a little distortion or static, he runs the risk that he doesn’t hear how he really sounds to the audience nor perform at the level he expects and is known for within certain venues where loud noise reverberates off the walls, etc., the band volume – sound distortion.

So… depending on the precise way they fit into the ear and how close INTO the ear can determine precision in hearing. Adam sounds & looks like he needs that continual certain “fit” to hear just enough better; hence the adjusting and
    that much better performance! Smile

PS. If Adam’s hearing has been affected (as mils suggested), that would possibly impact the precision of hearing, too. He might feel more need to push the earpiece around or adjust it (like with headphones) to compensate on louder performances.

mmm… I noticed that Adam is not adjusting as much either (except on songs that are BAND deferring – such as Dragon Attack which is more designed to highlight a band’s showcase as opposed to a singer’s performance). At the same time, I’ve also noticed that the sound technicians have gotten a lot of issue fixed as well, and added some reverb to Adam’s voice that also balances the singer/band sound dynamic all throughout the venue and enables him to hear himself better as well through the sound system and stage speakers. Thinking this may be some reason why? Adam seems to like both – earpiece and reverb – to get that more homeostatic hearing.
    Just my two cents Smile

Wow, smalls, would love to know how you came by your extensive knowledge of the vagaries of ear monitors and concert sound. “Sounds” like an interesting story, so do tell… Big Smile

    Thank you!

  43. asmallworld says:

    Hi Kiwi! Smile

So true about the earpiece volume control. Imo (and relative limited understanding), the issue with the earpiece with Adam adjusting it is not as much about volume control but on the a particular balance mix and quality (precision of how clearly – not loudly, per se – a singer hears his tone, pitch, resonance, and blend with the music with no static type interference or imbalance) of sound coming through the earpiece needed to hear the band, and oneself (as the singer) and how his singing actually sounds to the audience without distortion (louder, deeper tones from a band’s playing) or imbalance – either which can throw a singer off.

It’s hard to believe, but singers on stage can’t actually hear what the audience hears in front in the same way – melodic lines and all (re: a rock concert. acoustic, a Capella & opera are exceptions) So a singer needs that coming through the earpiece but within the mix and context that will enable the singer to hear the most accurate sound of his pitch and tone and all the variances he wants to add to his delivery.

An phenomenal power-house belter such as Adam will be very concerned with this and will do whatever it takes to perceive and hear precisely, incl. adjusting, & signals. Adam is exceptional at pitch, microtones and nuance, esp. in his backphrasing, so he seems to want particular mix, balance and ability to hear even the slightest tone difference in is singing within his earpiece.

Sorry about all my lengthy explanations guys.
Sometimes I don’t know how to explain things well or with occam’s razor. Especially if the topic is so interesting! (Hope my thoughts don’t read as a lot of hot airShame) Grin

  44. asmallworld says:

    Hi Tothebeat!Rose Smile

I’ve used earpieces before, and reverb. Used stage monitors in the ol’ days.
Never operated on Queen/Adam’s level, of course, and I certainly don’t know nearly as much as a lot of others, but some of the basics are similar enough and have stayed relatively the same. I do remember what it’s like to not be able to hear yourself and how you actually sound with the band as you need it on stage.

I appreciate you being so kind to express interest and asking me. Smile

  46. riskylady says:

I don’t think Adam’s feed in his earpiece is as loud as the audience’s, just that he likes the whole sound, not just his voice. The guy clarifies that here, and mentions about the loudness.

Another challenge comes from Lambert being such a dynamic performer. “He likes to work the crowd, and get them involved.” Key to creating the excitement level he wants is having an exciting mix in his head, Stokes adds. “He’s rare in monitor world in that he wants the full production in his ear, so I mix it just like I would if I was doing FOH, except I take the other non-vocal elements back a bit, take out some of the low-mids of instruments, and I might push up some other instrument that are a good reference for him to find his pitch. It really ends up being an FOH mix for an audience of one, with a few qualifiers thrown in.”

But “Adam is very sensitive, and he doesn’t want his mix to be too loud, which I appreciate, because I’m listening to it all at the same volume,” Stokes says. Lambert’s IEM’s are JH Audio’s JH16.

  49. Calgary says:

If you read the tech article, it says Adam likes his sound at a low level, so mils I don’t think you have to worry aboout his hearing. What the article said was that he likes to know what the sound is like in the venue; IEMs are often set up just for the music and voice; in Adam’s case he wants some ambient sound added to the mix to give him a better sense of how he sounds to the audience. But that doesn’t mean it has to be loud.
