As July ends, so does a fantastic series of concerts by Queen and Adam across North America. It will be a summer that many ALLers will never forget! Q+AL take a few weeks break before heading off to Asia and then for concerts Down Under. If the reception there is anything like it was here, Q+AL can expect to get some major loving!

Enjoy the chat!

The last time Don’t stop me Now was performed was June 26th in Calgary.

Just to set the record straight, actually the last time Don’t Stop Me Now was performed was July 1 in San Jose. I was there and was soooo thrilled that they played it for us because that is one of my most favorite songs ever. Smile

In re-viewing this video, I rediscovered another little gem that happened in San Jose that I had forgotten about – he caught the leopard print man-panties in his hand mid-conducting the All Your Love Tonight riffing, and said “Are these men’s underwear? Finally! Thank you. I like them very much. I shall wear them as a hat.” Need to add that moment to our list!

    LOL Love him.

    ADAM LAMBERT @adamlambert

This whole cultural appropriation debate is so 20 years ago. Our cultures r BLENDING. A new, open minded/hearted generation is on the rise.

I’ve been waiting to see if Adam would comment on this. There was a major debate while he was on tour and I figured he would eventually hear about it from a few people in his life once he had a chance to rest up. (Jlurksacto and I actually had a talk about it on the July 13th weekend.)

An African American woman, Sierra Mannie, wrote an article titled “Dear White Gays, Stop Stealing Black Female Culture.”

    http://time.com/author/sierra-mannie/

I found out about it because CNN held a mini debate, moderated by Dan Lemon, who is both black and gay. It was done via Skype and the expressions on Mannie’s face during the discussion were infuriating. By the time it was over, I was foaming at the mouth. Dan Lemon actually turned to the guy and said “You do understand what she is trying to say?”

I thought of Adam at the time and his many comments about there being a black woman inside of him screaming to get out. How is that anything but a tribute?

Bottom line, ignorance and prejudice is ignorance and prejudice, no matter who expresses it. This is a particularly egregious case because Mannie isolated a significantly beleaguered minority (drag queens) who are often despised by many in their own community, to strengthen her case. The standard tactic of a bully is to make her/his case by isolating the target to it’s weakest contingent.

I have to go out – on my way to Stratford to see a couple of plays – so you will be spared a lengthy dissertation on why this whole thing stinks but I figured Adam would eventually hear about this and be too angry to stay silent.

  8. cwm says:

TLKC – I remember reading that woman’s letter and thinking of Adam and his comments about having a black woman inside of him.

Regarding his tweet, I think Adam is also defending Katy Perry, who has come under criticism recently for cultural appropriation and speaks about it in her recent Rolling Stone interview. (He tweeted out the “bonus material” from that interview yesterday, so he obviously just read the article.)

After coming under fire for alleged cultural insensitivity (largely for having big-bootied mummies dance in her tour and dressing up as a geisha at the American Music Awards), Perry offers a passionate defense of her intentions.
“As far as the mummy thing, I based it on plastic surgery,” she says. “Look at someone like Kim Kardashian or Ice-T’s wife, Coco. Those girls aren’t African-American. But it’s actually a representation of our culture wanting to be plastic, and that’s why there’s bandages and it’s mummies. I thought that would really correlate well together… It came from an honest place. If there was any inkling of anything bad, then it wouldn’t be there, because I’m very sensitive to people.”

She knows the rules are changing, that “cultural appropriation” is increasingly uncool, but she’s not thrilled about it. “I guess I’ll just stick to baseball and hot dogs, and that’s it,” she says. “I know that’s a quote that’s gonna come to fuck me in the ass, but can’t you appreciate a culture? I guess, like, everybody has to stay in their lane? I don’t know.”

  10. TLKC says:

He is undoubtedly commenting on both situations but I think Sierra Mannie’s article hits much closer to home and, perhaps, even provides him with enough cover to say what he feels without getting drawn into a huge debate. Katy Perry, after all, has a voice and a chance to defend herself. Not too many rush to the defense of drag queens, even in the LGBTQ community.

ETA: KP does a very good job of speaking for herself in the RS article.

  11. asmallworld says:

Such a great quote on Q+AL…

“My goal for the evening is to just sing the sh*t out of the songs. And in listening to the recordings and looking at the songs, trying to understand what the intention was behind them. And I think Freddie- one of the things that made him so brilliant is you always understood what he was trying to communicate by the way his voice sounded and the lyrics and his phrasing and his energy. And I think my goal is just try to communicate the same idea. So I’m gonna try to be myself up there but pay respect in a tasteful way.”

LOVE this but don’t like the new hiccup thing he has been doing lately after “When love must die” it takes away the grit from that verse.)

gorgeous audio – but curious about this “hiccup” sound – hear it at 2:06/2:07 – is it actually Adam?

  17. cwm says:

smalls – where is that quote from that you posted at 8:24am? I don’t think I have seen that exact quote before.

ulti – yes that “hiccup” is Adam. It’s just the way he’s choosing to close that note, with a lilt upward. Doesn’t bother me.

Well, I guess all Indian women better stick to their saris, and all Japanese and Chinese women better dig out their kimonos and obis and cheongsams, and islanders in the South Pacific go back to sarongs and in some cases topless, and black women, stop all hair straightening (looking at you, Oprah). No western minis, shorts, PANTS (abomination) for you, ladies. It is a two-way street, after all. And NO rock and roll, jazz, rap, hiphop, etc. I mean, really? As long as we tolerate cultural diversity, the cultures will coexist and some blending is inevitable in a society where there is freedom of expression.
Or, we can adopt intolerance and end up like the Sunnis and the Shiites….oh, and BAN Halloween altogether.

Additional moments worth remembering on our list, although I don’t remember exactly when they happened and sorry I don’t have time to do the research at the moment – maybe someone else remembers…

    – He received the leopard-print men’s G-string/thong, asked if it was for men, and then said, “Ooohh, I’ll save this for later” and stuck it into his vest pocket. Also later wiped the sweat off his brow with it. LOL

    – Approached a woman during his “All Your Love Tonight” riffing and invited her to sing. She didn’t do well and he said something like, “With tits like that you oughtta able to sing,” proceeded to sing about her “lovely lovely bosom,” then said “I can say that because I’m a fag.” LOL Was this Calgary maybe?

    – Pink women’s panties were thrown at him at the end of Killer Queen – this I remember was at the NJ IZOD show because I was there. He held them up, flatly said “I got panties. Yay.” and threw them right back into the audience. LOL

    Makes so much sense.
That last statement, “… the creative impulse is actually very pure.” is especially poignant. Even Picasso and Van Gogh were criticized for their contributions due to their non-conformity in their time. I don’t necessarily like all of Katy Perry’s songs, some of them I do. Yet, whether or not our culture actually likes the way an artist expresses his/her craft; whether or not an artist sticks to the clean-cut “boxes” our societies have assigned to them – doesn’t diminish their actual talent and creativity one bit. I appreciate how Adam gets involved and defends his fellow artists. I would wager he can truly relate to some of what Katy Perry has been been experiencing and saying.

So thankful for Adam’s and other artists’ ‘creative impulses’ that enhance & enrich our lives and the young musicians & artists that follow in their influence and footsteps. When you think really think about it, where would our world and way of life be without it?

I’m not completely sure why, but that last statement touched me. I suppose it shows – in spite of some peoples’ perceived imperfections – his intelligence, his depth of understanding, the good intent he really has inside and his soft heart.
He seeks to express & educate – not offend.
Just want to give him a hug. lol

I totally agree with everything Adam said. And with you riskylady . Wasn’t America supposed to be the cultural melting pot?

On a totally different subject, I am watching a documentary about Jimi Hendrix, and they just showed him performing Purple Haze. I love the fact that while Adam is trying to make it as a “pop” singer, he is so much more than that. He has such an understanding and love of modern musical history, and in his concerts, when he is finished with his proscribed set of current hits, he lets himself go in his encores and digs deep into the gods of Rock.
