Read a book instead… I am a book person, I like to keep myself attached to the same subject and characters for a long time. I am not a good reader of magazines, for me it’s more demanding that the subjects change all the time. But for some (most?) young people it’s opposite, they can’t concentrate on a whole book!
It was interesting to hear what many of you told about your youngsters’ perspectives on that subject! I have only watched my 8-year-old god daughter, and I am happy to see that she loves free play and has a very good imagination. She also reherses real life stuff by playing it – we have played hairdresser, restaurant, movie theatre… She’s much better at technology than me (which doesn’t require much
), but also has a lot of real hobbies like gymnastics and scout activity.
Talking about OUR obsession, I think that taped banana was a very clever and cheap Trespassing symbol
I am gonna use it later if necessary. Damn, if I had used that in London I guess I had found the others (or they me) a lot easier, lol.

Good morning! A quick note. I am watching husbands too and enjoy it very much. Will miss any breakfast that might be served due to work so will have to catch up later.
LadyNorth, since you are new to Adam fandom you might not know about Husbands. It is a web series co-written and co-starring Brad Bell, aka Cheeks, who was Adam’s first love, and the one who was in the pics of Adam kissing a guy that came out during Idol. The web series is brilliant and well worth going back to watch the first season. Each episode is only about 5 minutes long, so it goes quickly. The second season episode is longer. YAY! Can’t wait for the rest. By the way, a lot of us assume that songs like Chokehold were written about Adam’s relationship with Cheeks.

Chokehold is a killer song – I love it. I think it is about Cheeks, too. I think Adam’s “relationships” comment, in plural, is his way of being gentlemanly about it.

Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of Elvis’s death and was perusing through Elvis photos. Amazing how Adam resembles him in several angles.
According to a Today show “expert” lol neon colors are out, grape color is in. Also jewelry collars are the big thing now. Maybe that’s what Adam bought in Japan.
LadyNorth, if I am not mistaken Adam and Cheeks were together for about 3 years (correct me if I am wrong, girls),and he was the one who introduced him to a lot of the LA club scene. They are still in contact. (In the first season of Husbands, that famous photo was even on Cheek’s bedstand, lol.) I think that Cheeks broke Adam’s heart. Drake was a guy who he dated while he was on Idol and just afterwards. When Adam started getting famous he ran because he couldn’t take the publicity. He always looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I know that Adam wrote about him in the liner notes of FYE, but I don’t think that it was such a “great love” IMO.

rs, from what we know, ( and really, how much is that? ) Cheeks cheated on Adam and broke his heart. Can you even imagine? Having Adam in your life and cheating on him? But, he must have made a special impact on the family, since Neil and his folks still seem to be friendly with him. I don’t think Adam has completely written him off either, since he tweets and re-tweets with him.
I thought Husbands was cute, but hope it’s better this time around. I realize it’s not high drama, but is making a point about gay marriage and relationships.

LadyNorth… I, too, prefer books to magazines. Whenever I travel with my daughter, she always brings a pile of magazines. I always have a good book. I love fiction whereas my husband only reads nonfiction.

On the Cheeks/Adam thing, there was one interview with Cheeks where he said he’d had one relationship where the guy was too needy and wanted more to “be in love” than to have a genuine connection. I always wondered if that was Adam, because of many remarks Adam made about wanting a relationship so badly.
riskylady, thank you for posting that French article! I love that French reviews always emphasize Adam’s VOICE, unlike many articles here. And the reader comments were wonderful, as was the little photo gallery. I thought the article did a very nice job of summarizing his career in a few paragraphs.
Impossible not to compare Cheeks and Sauli – physically, a lot of resemblance (that jawline!) but Sauli is like a physically healthier and much saner version of Cheeks. Still funny and a little snarky, but not in a hurtful way. I love that Adam has found someone who is not a complete 180/rejection of his former lover; that seems very emotionally healthy to me.
(But, as we always say at the end of these posts, “what do I know?”)

Cheeks the character is probably a little more flamboyant than Cheeks the actual person (Brad goes by “Cheeks” in real life, too), but from what I’ve seen of his GoCheeksGo videos, it’s probably not too far off from the way he actually is. He is as smart as a whip, sassy, and very funny, but I think he is probably also pretty acerbic and cutting as well when he wants to be.
Adam and Cheeks were together when Adam was in his early-mid twenties, prior to American Idol. Maybe age 22ish to 24 or 25ish? Neither one was famous then. Cheeks is not “famous” now either, but he is starting to make a name for himself in some circles, and he has a loyal internet following.
Adam went on American Idol when he was 27, so he and Cheeks had already split up by then, and Adam had apparently gone through a “dark period” after their break up. Cheeks was Adam’s first love, Cheeks supposedly cheated on Adam, and their break up was very hard on him and apparently broke his heart. (But now they seem to have a friendly relationship and Cheeks is clearly friendly with Adam’s family, so I guess they’ve worked it out.)
When Adam was on Idol at age 27, he was dating Drake. (If there were any relationships between Cheeks and Drake, we don’t know about them, so from age 25-27 were probably some of his single years.) The song Voodoo (which I love) is apparently about Drake. But they broke up at the same time that the FYE album was released (Nov 2009) because Adam’s fame got to be too much for the relationship. Drake is an artist (painter); he never seemed comfortable with the sudden fame and spotlight that Adam was thrust into. I never got the impression that the relationship with Drake was at the same depth as the relationships with Cheeks and Sauli anyway. But I’m sure the break-up was difficult nonetheless because it completely coincided with Adam’s FYE album release and AMA fall-out.
During the FYE promo and Glam Nation Tour, Adam was single (for about a year). I get the sense that he drifted in and out of some short-term encounters but nothing ever stuck until he met Sauli toward the end of the GNT.
Adam and Sauli met after the GNT show in Helsinki, which was the first show of the European leg of the GNT, in early November, 2010. After all of the European shows were over, Adam spent a week in Paris in early December doing promo and taking a little vacation break; there are a couple of random photos of Sauli with Adam in Paris, so we know that Sauli joined him there (and Adam later said that he was in Paris with “a special friend” when he heard about his Grammy nomination). The GNT finished up in LA in mid-December. Then Adam went into hiding (and apparently experienced some exhaustion and depression). The first we saw of Adam and Sauli again were the pics of them at Disneyland in mid-late January 2011. Sauli went back and forth between LA and Finland a few times for visits until he actually moved to LA in June-ish (I think?) 2011. I think Adam posted the famous Rakastan photo in May. That photo, to me, was Adam’s declaration to the world that their relationship was for real – committed and in love, not just dating.
And the rest – as they say – is history.
Oh God, I can’t believe I know all this! What has my life become?? LOL I hope others will correct any details I got wrong.

Thanks cwm, I am supposed to be packing for my trip and I didn’t have time to go into detail, and I never could have put it all down so well as you. I will just add that the Finnish papers picked up the Adam/Sauli story very early and so did our resident sleuth riskylady, who told cher and me about it, so we knew something was going on very early on, before Sauli came to the States. We didn’t say anything here for risk of anything getting leaked and we wanted them to keep their privacy for as long as they could. From London Adam went to Paris for a short holiday before returning to the States and Sauli met him there. There were some pics from that time. OK, back to packing.
Thanks rs. Yes I knew about the early pics of Sauli and Adam in the Finnish papers, but at that point, all we knew was that Adam had met someone at a bar. (And it wasn’t as though it was the first time we had seen that happen haha. Although maybe there were early signs in the Finnish press that this was more than your typical bar pick-up, I don’t know. I didn’t pay close attention to those reports at the time.)
It wasn’t until pics showed up of Sauli in Paris and then in LA that we knew something was REALLY up.

It was the only time I had seen Adam’s name linked up with someone specific who was named, since Drake, and referrences to their being together just kept popping up. We hoped that something was going on, and really appreciated how Sauli was keeping his mouth shut about the whole thing. We liked what we were seeing about this guy as we checked him out. He seemed to be just Adam’s type.

I thought I knew all the details, cwm, but you’re incredible. The one thing I always remembered was that Adam said he was 26 when he auditioned for Idol – that’s what he said at the audition – “I’m 26 and from Hollywood, California.” Don’t know what month that was and he turned 27 in January when the show really started. That was such a screwed-up season – three groups of thirteen? WTH? I never figured it out and Idol never did it again obviously.

Since Sauli was known in Finland, had been named in the initial Finnish reports, and the Finnish press was all over this development, there probably was more information forthcoming from very early on than usual. And people were able to check Sauli out online from very early on.
For some reason, I didn’t really pay close attention to the early Sauli reports until the Disneyland pictures popped up. Then I checked out some of his videos online and really liked what I saw. And the fact that he was keeping his mouth shut about the whole thing was very endearing and boosted his points way up in my book.

Calgary – I still follow Kevin on twitter. He’s still making music with Vanity Machine, his group. I like his stuff; he’s really good.
My take on it is that he was set up as a temporary musical director for the initial promo period until Brian became available. Apparently Brian and Kevin have worked together previously and Brian has said that he told Adam about Kevin. So my guess is that Adam went to Brian initially, and Brian said “yes but I’m not available not until May, so how about if my friend Kevin fills in in the meantime.”

It should be posted somewhere on this blog so that newbies can find it. It still seems surprising to me that peeps “find” Adam now…he has been around for three years! but ideally LOTS of peeps will find him and we have learned from LadyNorth that there is a lot of history to relate to new peeps.

So….my brother is in China and has been for several years. He teaches English to college students. He teaches at the “High” level. One of the slang phrases he always includes is “Justin Bieber is a douchebag.” But , I digress.
So today, he emailed me and we talked about life, yada yada, then, he said, “your favorite Idol is supposed to play with Queen.” He’s a huge Queen fan. So, in as brief a way as possible, I informed him of many factoids. And attached many clips from the July 14th show. I’m dying to hear his feedback.
LOL. He’s considered a full professor in China. He teaches at a different university in a different province every semester or year. Wherever he is, he gets a salary, a furnished apartment ( a futon = furnished ), a one burner stove, a rice steamer, a sack of rice, and a bicycle. Sometimes he gets a computer with Chinese internet. It’s very limited. He also has the luxury of a “bathroom” down the hall. If he’s lucky it has running water. Most often it’s a communal hole in the floor.
Another slang expression he always teaches is ” Lady Gaga is a fame whore.” or, ” Mick Jagger is a sexy beast.”

First of all Cheeks is a persona, off camera/work he is much quieter/normal, sweet and a really nice guy. Just because he is OTT in his videos and in Husbands does not mean he is like that in his personal life. I have been around him enough to know that. I worked with Cassidy Haley for a while and he and Cheeks are BFFs.

adamland – thank you for clarifying the distinction between Cheeks the persona and Brad the actual private individual. That’s helpful to know and makes total sense.
I didn’t mean to imply negativity in my comments about Brad. I can tell that he is sweet and a nice guy; I think that actually comes across in his videos, too. And it is also clear that he is very smart, very perceptive, and has quite a sharp wit. I like him. I’m just guessing that sometimes that sharp wit gets used in his real-life relationships, too.
Thanks also for posting those excerpts from Adam’s 2009 Out Magazine interview. Very poignant. That was such a personal, revealing interview. Such a shame that the interview itself got overshadowed and undermined by the attacks that the editor Hicklin flung at Adam and his team regarding the terms surrounding the interview.

re Cheeks….thanks for all the info. I haven’t watched Husbands and haven’t really seen that much stuff about him, but the little I have seen haven’t warmed me to him. Don’t know why, whereas with Sauli I liked his ‘vibe’ from the beginning.
